Stamp cleaner

From: cpascott (seh-letterbox@comcast.net) | Date: 2004-10-13 20:47:00 UTC

Hey all ...

I've been thinking about picking up some stamp cleaner. After going
to the MMM we got a bit tired of stamping everything in black -- the
overwelhming color choice for MMM boxes. We tried to stamp a few
boxes in other colors using our own ink pads, but the black ink
residue on the stamp darkened the other colors when stamped and left a
solid residue of black on the ink pads.

Stamp cleaner to the rescue, perhaps?

We were thinking something like this:

Does anyone out there carry stamp cleaner to clean box stamps? What
is your experience with it?

I picked up a bottle at Michael's, it works well and
dries quickly. I keep it in my back along with about
257lbs of other stuff...

I carry a ziplock with a damp wash cloth and another with a dry
one. I have found that the water does a great job of getting the
ink off of stamps with just some easy pressure. I then use the dry
one to get the dampness off of the stamp. I have not had one that
this does not work on yet. In most cases the stamp is nearly ink
free.

I do this same thing. Stamp cleaners have been a large discussion at
times on the list. Please keep in mind that they are heavily
perfumed and may have tendency to attract things. I prefer a wet
paper towell in a baggie (holds moisture well, and baby wipes are
also highly perfumed) along with a dry paper towell to blot with.

Though I use stamp cleaner on my signature stamp sometimes, I would not use it on any of the stamps in my boxes and would never use it on a stamp in someone else's box. I took it to heart when people said fragrances would attract critters and wouldn't want to be responsible for the demise of someone's box at the hands (paws?) of a critter. I took an old, ragged towel and cut it into approximately 3" squares. I keep a few damp ones (just water) in one zip-lock and dry ones in another. When they get really gross, I throw them away. One ragged bath towel will yield lots of little squares and they work well.

I have a bottle of stamp cleaner for home use, but on the trail I use
a little water from my waterbottle on a paper towel and blot or pat
the stamp until it's clean.

As many people use pigment inks will a wet paper towel actually remove
the ink? Surely it will work on dye ink, but I didn't think water
alone would work on pigment.

Being aware of fragrence is a good idea. Thanks for the heads up.

We pretty much do the same thing, only we've got a sponge in a soap dish that we wet before leaving the house. "Stamping" the sponge a few times gets the ink off (and doesn't ruin the stamp with repetitive rubbing motions, very important because our poor signature stamp is startling to slowly crumble and we don't have a new one carved yet!), and then we stamp a paper towel to dry & see if the stamp's clean enough for its next impression.

Doodle.

If you use it while it is still wet, it works great, obviously it is
a little harder when it dries, but pigment dries slower, so it isn't
a huge problem.
